Tax Pros in Maryland FAQs

There are several different databases that you can use to check the credentials of tax pros in Maryland. The IRS has a searchable database of all enrolled agents as well as CPAs and tax attorneys with preparer tax identification numbers (PTIN). Search by name or look for all of the registered tax preparers within a certain distance of your zip code.

To check a CPA's credentials, look at the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy or search for CPAs on the nationwide site CPA Verify. The Maryland State Bar Association website also features a searchable database that you can use to make sure a tax attorney is licensed to practice in Maryland.

Once you've determined that a tax pro has active credentials, learn more about their credibility by reading reviews. Be wary of advertisements that are disguised as editorial content, and whenever possible, try to do your research on sites with reviews from real former clients, such as the Better Business Bureau, Google Business Listings, and TaxCure.

Maryland has unique tax codes, operational processes, and resolution options. If you're dealing with a state tax problem, a local pro has the knowledge and experience required to solve that problem. Additionally, local tax pros are focused on providing their clients with the highest level of personalized services. In contrast, the big tax relief firms tend to lack experience with the tax laws in Maryland, and they are notorious for using aggressive sales tactics to push clients into programs that aren't necessarily the best option for their situations.

There are three tax professionals who can represent you in front of the Comptroller of Maryland: tax attorneys, certified public accountants (CPAs), and enrolled agents (EAs). All of these pros can help you make payment arrangements, apply for settlements, deal with audits, dispute tax assessments, and appeal unwanted collection actions, but generally, only a tax attorney can represent you in court. When hiring a tax pro, look for someone who has experience with your tax problem.
