FAQs Tax Attorneys in Dallas

The State Bar of Texas has a searchable database that you can use to make sure an attorney's credentials are active. Scroll to the middle of the page and enter the attorney's first name, last name, and/or firm name.

To search for a tax attorney without a name, select Advanced Search. Then, choose "tax" from the drop-down menu, and if desired, you can search just in Dallas, in Dallas County or Tarrant County, throughout the whole state, or within a certain distance of your zip code. Then, learn more about the attorney by reading reviews on sites like the Better Business Bureau, Google Business listings, or TaxCure.

When you hire a local tax attorney based in Dallas, you get to work with a professional who is experienced with both IRS and Texas tax problems. You also get guidance tailored to your needs from a tax professional who understands the tax codes. In contrast, if you contact a big tax relief firm, you will likely never have direct contact with an attorney and will often only speak with a sales rep who doesn't have an in-depth understanding of tax resolution options.

Tax attorneys can help you with all kinds of tax problems from unfiled returns to tax debts and tax disputes. However, while they are the best option for criminal and/or Tax Court cases, they are not the only option for other tax problems. You can also consider hiring a CPA or an enrolled agent.

Although there are no LITCs in Dallas, there are two offices in Fort Worth. Contact the Legal Aid of Northwest Texas LITC at 800-955-3959 or 817-336-3943 to learn about their services and hours. Or reach out to the Texas A&M University School of Law, Tax Dispute Resolution Clinic at 817-212-4123. Generally, your income must be under 250% of the poverty line and you must be dealing with a tax debt worth less than $50,000 to get help at these clinics.

The IRS's offices in Dallas are at 1100 Commerce St., Room 121, Dallas, TX 75242. You can make account inquiries, pay taxes due with checks or money orders, get assistance with tax laws for individuals, handle departing alien clearance, request an ID protection PIN number, apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), set up payment arrangements, and get tax forms. You can also file Form 911 to request assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate Service or file Form 2290 (Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return).

There is also an office in Farmer's Branch at 4050 Alpha Rd., Room 170 and another office in Fort Worth at 819 Taylor St., Room 6A14. Both of these offices offer the same services as the Dallas office. Call (844) 545-5640 to make an appointment.
