I received an audit notice for my most recently filed 1040. They were questioning Schedule C expenses. My wife had been sick during the record gathering time for that return's preparation. So some of the expenses were estimated and without receipts. I called Mark to ask him to go to the audit with me, and he said he would go in my place. I asked if that was really allowed, and he assured me it is. He immediately filed a tax power of attorney and call the tax compliance officer to schedule their meeting. He had to make a couple of trips to the IRS office to cover all of the items they were questioning. There was a large penalty for tax understatement that resulted from the expenses that were disallowed. Mark offered my wife's illness as reasonable cause for abating most of the penalty. I had to pay a little bit, but it was much less than their first proposal. We set up an installment agreement to make it easier for me to pay off my balance.
