About Joel Nowakowski
With more than two decades of broad-based accounting and finance experience, I began my career in public accounting with one of the largest firms worldwide, Ernst and Young, LLP (now EY) in their New York City office.
I am an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA). Enrolled agents are federally-authorized tax practitioners who have technical expertise in the field of taxation and who are empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels—examination, collection, and appeals—of the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Only enrolled agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in all areas of taxation, representation, and ethics before they are awarded unlimited representation rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who are state-licensed and who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all enrolled agents specialize in taxation. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.
The areas I specialize and provide services for are:
Tax compliance and preparation for both individuals and businesses
IRS and State tax resolution and representation (Audits, tax liens and levies, offers in compromise, installment agreements, collections, etc.)
Advisory services
Certifications and Licensure:
IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (United States Department of the Treasury)
Certified Tax Resolution Consultant (CTRC)
Education:
Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) - Eastern Connecticut State University
Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) - New York Institute of Technology
Master’s degree of Science in Taxation (MST) - University of New Haven
I am a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) as well as the Connecticut Society of Enrolled Agents (CTSEA). I am also a member of the Tax Rep Network (TRN), a national association of tax accountants and attorney’s that specialize in IRS tax resolution.
I am also a veteran of the United States Navy and Navy Reserve, have served on various boards and committees as well as held office as an elected official (Town of Farmington, CT).
