About Joel Nowakowski

With more than two decades of broad-based accounting and finance experience, I began my career in public accounting with one of the largest firms worldwide, Ernst and Young, LLP (now EY) in their New York City office.

I am an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA). Enrolled agents are federally-authorized tax practitioners who have technical expertise in the field of taxation and who are empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels—examination, collection, and appeals—of the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Only enrolled agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in all areas of taxation, representation, and ethics before they are awarded unlimited representation rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS. Unlike attorneys and CPAs, who are state-licensed and who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all enrolled agents specialize in taxation. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.

The areas I specialize and provide services for are:

Tax compliance and preparation for both individuals and businesses
IRS and State tax resolution and representation (Audits, tax liens and levies, offers in compromise, installment agreements, collections, etc.)
Advisory services
Certifications and Licensure:

IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (United States Department of the Treasury)
Certified Tax Resolution Consultant (CTRC)

Education:

Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) - Eastern Connecticut State University
Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) - New York Institute of Technology
Master’s degree of Science in Taxation (MST) - University of New Haven
I am a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) as well as the Connecticut Society of Enrolled Agents (CTSEA). I am also a member of the Tax Rep Network (TRN), a national association of tax accountants and attorney’s that specialize in IRS tax resolution.

I am also a veteran of the United States Navy and Navy Reserve, have served on various boards and committees as well as held office as an elected official (Town of Farmington, CT).

We were on the Board of Directors of the CT Society of Enrolled Agents (CtSEA).

Joel is a highly skilled tax resolution professional who recently argued a case before the IRS Chief Counsel's Office. Joel was representing a client who the IRS was attempting to collect $1.5 million in delinquent payroll taxes from related to a family business. Joel successfully argued that his client was not responsible for this delinquency.

Joel was highly effective at eliminating the penalties on our outstanding tax liabilities. He ended up reducing a nearly $100,000 liability, to under $30,000. Highly recommended tax professional.

Reaching out to Joel / BTA LLC was hands down the best decision my family and I made regarding our personal finances in the last several years. We faced an insane uphill battle with an error that hit our Tax Return - putting us in a position to owe (3)million dollars on our federal return. After months of trying to contact the IRS and work with them to get the issue amended/resolved, we finally got in touch with Joel's team to help navigate on our behalf - and for context, we are a double income household, in creative industries. This error was made in between us filing and the return processing, meaning we had no control over the timing for when it was amended, as it racked up insane fees/penalties as we were unable to meet a payment schedule even remotely close to what was being required. All it took was a quick conversation with Joel on my first call to his office for him to setup a profile, plan of action, and immediately begin working on our case. We started work on this (in the middle of both tax season and upheavals/layoffs within the IRS) in early February and by early March the issue was resolved, all penalties were wiped, and we were able to take a breath for the first time in over a year since the owed amount had been communicated to us by the IRS. Cannot thank Joel and his team enough for not only reassuring us through the entire process that they had it handled with frequent updates and clarification, but working so quickly to get the issue resolved so it wasn't weighing on us. Joel offered to work on our current taxes during this process, and that was an equally seamless process that was completed in record time with savings that we would have never garnered ourselves, filing taxes on our own. So grateful for the empathy and urgency that Joel showed us during this entire ordeal and would not hesitate to recommend him to others.
