About John Pontius
John Pontius is a tax law attorney who represents individual and business clients with sensitive and serious tax matters before the IRS and state taxing authorities. He has experience helping clients with complex tax issues including FBAR examinations, offshore and domestic disclosures, FATCA, FIRPTA, unfiled tax returns, tax liens and levies, and trust fund recovery penalties. He also handles IRS and state audit examinations, appeals, and penalty abatement, and he defends people in cases of tax fraud and evasion. A third-generation Washingtonian, John earned his Masters of Laws in Tax (L.L.M.) from Georgetown University Law Center. He started his legal career as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army. Then, he worked with the international tax group KPGM for two years and with tax controversy firms for five years. Finally, he launched his own firm so that he could provide honest, dedicated, valuable tax resolution services to individuals and businesses. John is very active in professional organizations. He served as the Co-Chair for the monthly Tax Practice and Procedure Round Table. He's also a member of the Maryland State Bar Association Tax Section Council.
